When You're Not Feeling Creative...

There are often times when I just can't do it. I've experienced this recently. While I don't believe in writer's block, I do believe that as Ms Badu once said, "it's downloading". For you, "It" can be a new product idea, a new song, a new book; whatever your it is, sometimes things can just take a while to come into fruition. Thing is some days that's not even the case - some days you just flat out don't feel like creating. I have had more days like this recently than I really care to admit.

The problem with this feeling is, I have most likely already announced to the world that this is who I am; an artist. Sooooo like it or not, somebody, somewhere, is waiting on me to do something epic. That's a ton of pressure (sometimes, not all the time), but it is what it is. With that said, here are 3 things I do, when I ain't feelin it.

1. Take a walk

Sometimes inspiration is in the most unlikely places. I often find that venturing out in the city among all the hustle and bustle is the best way to conjure up great creative energy. Sometimes I'll find inspiration in fashion while window shopping. Sometimes it's the colors of the trees or the flowers. Sappy, I know, but it works. Sometimes, it's the heartbeat of the city; the sounds of car horns or the wheels rolling on the street that inspire a new song or a melody in my head. You never know-so get out there and see.

2. Reading

Every single day I read something that has to do with my industry. I research the trends, I check out retweets on twitter, or sometimes it's a simple quote on IG that gets me over the hump. Other times, I will go back a few months and read my own words here on the blog that have inspired you (where I felt like I was just rambling...lol). Aside from that, reading the bios of artists that you admire can often re-inspire you to be great.

3. Meditation

For me this comes right along side prayer. For you it may come with exercise or yoga. I have a verse that comes direct through my iOS push notifications every morning at 5AM via the Bible App. I can honestly say, daily, whatever this verse happens to be, it is connected in some way to the events of the day, to the hours to come. I spend about 30 minutes in quiet reflection on how I will implement the verse and how it may apply to something ongoing that's keeping me stagnant. It may not come to me instantly that it applies, but eventually, it does come.

Sometimes you absolutely can feel stuck in a rut. Rather than stay there, these are a few of the things that you can do. Have something you'd like to add to the list? Feel free to comment. Have a specific question about something that has you stuck? Email Me
